Scotty Auditioned in Milwaukee during the summer of 2010. He wanted to sing the song Your Man by Josh Turner but it wasn’t cleared at that time. The producer of the show asked him to sing something besides country so he sang The Way You Look Tonight by Frank Sinatra. Fortunately 15 minutes before taking the stage, the producer got the song Your Man cleared. This would be the song that got Scotty through to the next round. Scotty sang over 24 songs on the show during his four months on television. He even got to perform with famous singers such as Tim McGraw.
Scotty's fans loved his low notes and his good guy appearance. He was a favorite from the start of the competition. He performed songs such as, “Get Ready,” “I Hope You Dance,” “Long Black Train,” and many more. He stuck to his country genre, but the judges wanted him to venture out into some rock music. He would sing in other genres but he always put his country twist on it.
The finale was between him and Lauren Alaina. This was the youngest matchup in the history of Idol. Lauren was just sixteen at the time. Scotty and Lauren won the hearts of the fans due to their amazing voices especially when they sang duets. They became really good friends and remain friends to this day.
